In the midst of planning for natural disasters, caregivers for people living with dementia face additional challenges. For some people living with dementia, natural disasters can be extremely disorienting. The sudden change in environment, the lack of control, and the break in routine can escalate feelings of helplessness. It's crucial for caregivers to be aware of these challenges and plan accordingly. Below are some tips and resources to help you navigate these challenging times while being a dementia caregiver!
What to Safeguard and Bring Along if Evacuated:
Essential Medications:Â Ensure you have a sufficient supply of medications. Request an emergency prescription if possible.
Important Documents:Â Keep IDs, insurance papers, financial paperwork, medical history, and contact numbers for healthcare providers and family readily available.
Medical Devices and Supplies:Â Don't forget necessary medical equipment and supplies.
Comforting Items:Â Bring along items that provide comfort and familiarity, like a favorite blanket or photo album.
Creating a Calm Environment:
Utilize Comfort and Familiarity:Â Play familiar music or engage in activities that bring joy.
Maintain a Routine:Â Even small routines can provide a sense of normalcy and help manage unpredictability.
Safety Measures:
Identification:Â Ensure the person with dementia has identification on them at all times.
GPS Tracker:Â In some cases, having a GPS tracker can be beneficial in case of unintentional separation.
Reassurance and Communication:
Reassure Safety: Remind them they are safe and in the right place.
Calm Tone:Â Use a soothing voice to help ease anxiety.
Power outages can be particularly challenging, especially if medical devices depend on electricity. Prepare by: Battery-Powered Lights:Â Keep flashlights and lanterns at hand. Generator:Â Consider a generator for essential medical purposes, such as oxygen machines.
