What is Capgras Syndrome?

Capgras syndrome is a fascinating and rare psychological condition that involves the irrational belief that a familiar person, often a loved one or pet, has been replaced with an exact duplicate. This delusion can be particularly challenging for individuals experiencing it, as well as for their families and caregivers.

Though it is a rare condition, Capgras syndrome can occur in individuals living with dementia. This adds a layer of complexity to the care needed, as those affected may struggle with distinguishing reality from their delusions. In care settings, it is crucial for caregivers to approach individuals with empathy and understanding, helping them navigate their experience without exacerbating their distress.

Have you encountered Capgras syndrome in your life or work? Sharing experiences and strategies can be beneficial for those who face this challenging condition.

Thank you for all that you do to care for those living with dementia!
